Fracking the George Washington National Forest

The Washington D.C. city council passed a resolution opposing fracking in the George Washington National forest, a 1.1 million-acre forest, that contains headwaters of the Potomac River, the sole source of drinking water for the nation's capital.
This resolution makes Washington D.C. the third major U.S. city to denounce fracking for its possible pollution hazards and cost of contamination monitoring by calling on the U.S. Forest Service to prohibit fracking in the forest. The ultimate decision, on whether or not fracking should be permited, lies with the U.S. Forest Service, which is currently updating its long-term management plan for the George Washington National Forest.
